Firewall Rules

If you run an ISA or other content-filtering firewall, you will need to ensure that in addition to standard web-content types, that you also allow the following file extensions through your firewall (these are all served as standard HTTP GETs on TCP port 80):

  • .dcr (Adobe Shockwave)
  • .swf (Adobe Flash)
  • .flv (Adobe Flash Video)
  • .w32 (Adobe Director Shockwave Xtra for Windows)
  • .xpku (Adobe Director Shockwave Xtra for Macintosh)
  • .sf2 (Soundfont)

We make the assumption that you are already allowing the following standard and de-facto standard web filetypes through your firewall:

  • .html (HTML files - and all text/html MIME type files)
  • .css (Cascading Stylesheet)
  • .js (Javascript file)
  • .xml (XML)
  • .pdf (Adobe PDF)
  • .mp3 (MP3 audio)

You can test whether everything is configured correctly by visiting our browser-test page. You should see 4 green ticks and an animation. The last link on that page loads a sample resource. Click the link and check that the resource plays, or that the Shockwave Xtras install, along with the soundfont, and then that the resource loads.

If it doesn't load, you may need to check your firewall and any proxy filtering rules. The list of file-types above should all be permitted.

The xtras and soundfonts we currently serve are listed below, but we may add additional files in the future, so you should not limit your firewall filters to just these specific files or hostnames:

You should be able to test the successful delivery of these file-types by clicking the links above. You should be prompted where to save the file; if you are not, then this may be indicative of a mis-configured or restricted firewall.

If this is the case, you should check that the following hosts are allowed to be accessed by your firewalled machines:

Email filtering

We send out password reminders, login resets and other emails to our users from the SMTP server at 217.69.46.42. If you can add this IP address your email whitelist filters along with the following users: webmaster@charanga.com, helpdesk@charanga.com and orders@charanga.com, then this will aid our support emails to your users.
